I’ve broken this post up into a couple of sections – newbie, intermediate and skilled. Today I’m chatting about general accessories to help you out at CrossFit, next week I’ll chat about my favourite CrossFit clothing!
Newbie aka “I am new to CrossFit”:
For starters, some comfy shorts or crops that allow you to squat, a pair of comfortable runners (but not something you actually run in), a towel, a drink bottle and some stamina. ;)
Until you get comfortable with the workouts, exercises, movements and even if you really like CrossFit; there is no point in spending money on equipment.
For shoes, rather than wearing your asics that you use for running I would suggest getting a pair of shoes that have more of a minimal ‘drop’ that allows you to easily complete Olympic lifts and squats. Shoes such as Reebok Nano’s (from your local sport shop) or Inov8’s F-Lite 195 from Run Stop Shop are something I started off with and wholeheartedly recommend.
Intermediate aka “I’ve been doing CrossFit for a while now”:
Again, if you’re liking the minimal shoes, stick with them. Try different brands if you need to.
One of the first things I purchased was a speed rope. It’s quicker than a normal rope and really helps with your double unders! It’s so light!
I’ve been doing CrossFit now for 2 years (on and off) and have just recently purchased wrist strength wraps (to help support your wrists when lifting) – best investment ever and helps give me the confidence to bust out those 1RMs.
Another must if gymnastic grips (which I haven’t got around to purchasing yet). Apparently these are THE BOMB when it comes to doing pull ups and can save ripping your hands to shreds!
Something else to consider is weight lifting shoes….
Skilled aka “I can do a muscle-up”: (haha)
So you really love CrossFit and Oly lifting. Next up is weight lifting shoes. I don’t own any, but they can really help with performing your lifts. Adidas, Nike and Reebok make them. Or there Check out a range at Eastbay or Rogue Fitness.
What gear do you own specifically for the workouts you do?
Do you do CrossFit? What’s the gear you can’t live without?
