All last year I told myself over and over to stretch, go to pilates or yoga, or a body balance class each week. Over and over again I didn’t keep my promises.
In the end, my body gave me more than enough reasons why I should have been stretching. I badly inflamed a disc in my back (L4/L5), and it took me around 5-6 months to recover. Lots of physio, stretching, rest and building strength back up in my core (Transverse abdominals) and lower back to get back to ‘normal’.
Last year I got to meet Mark Ewins from Mach 1 Fitness through an event I ran (Fitness Fair/Lululemon Trunk show at my gym). I decided to get in contact with him about joining in on a once a week class. Turns out he had an opening on a semi-private session that afternoon and I jumped in!
There were four other people in the session and I generally worked on the pilates reformer machines after rolling out on a foam roller/lacrosse ball to loosen all the fascia covering my muscles.
The session went for an hour and I could feel myself loosening up. It was a great little session, stretching and working my core. I have terribly tight hips (thanks CrossFit!), but scheduling a session each week as well as doing some at home stretches should help with this.
Have you tried pilates before? What do you do to stretch and mobile your body?
