What’s your ‘day job’?
I work for MWR on Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, as a Fitness Center Lead. I essentially manage and run our functional fitness center, where we house Modern Army Combatives and facilitate CrossFit Arifjan, a non-profit military affiliate. As a CrossFit Level 1 Certified trainer, I support CrossFit Arifjan, teaching regular classes and coaching Orientations for servicemen deployed to the base. As an employee of MWR, I also host and plan various events to enhance morale, like the Arifjan Open (an Olympic Lifting Meet), and the 2007 CrossFit Games Throwback.
What’s your story? How did you start living an active life?
First year of college: I was unmotivated, gaining weight, smoking cigarettes, drinking like a fish, and I decided I hated who I was. I saw a Runner’s World magazine on the counter at home and decided to “fake it until I made it.” I became a runner. I couldn’t even run 400m without stopping, but I was determined to be someone, something, and get more out of life.
I kept with running, eventually working up to the half marathon (which I’ve run 7 times, best time of 1:47). Then a friend threw me into CrossFit, I hated it! I couldn’t squat, do a push up, a pull-up, or even clean a 45 pound barbell. I was a train wreck. I quit in a month and went back to running.
Then I went to the South Central CrossFit Regionals in Tomball, Texas. It was still outside then, had a very “Aromas” feel to it. I loved it. The energy, the atmosphere, the people, ah, it was incredible. Watching the female athletes … Carey Kepler … It lit a fire!
