Race Review – River’s Gift 10km River Run
My first planned fun run was the Geelong River Run in support of River’s Gift (raising money for SIDs research). I signed up for it along with Jayneo my bestest bud, and her friends Bianca and Jean. It was a humid, sticky morning and there were a few hundred people there – a great vibe too!
My training had been fairly non existent, a few 5km runs more than anything and I’d worked up to a 7km run. But that was about it! I knew I would be able to manage it (having been doing 3 x crossfit classes each week too), but also knew that it’d be tough for those last few kms!
Thankfully I stayed at my friends place, we ate our toast and meet up with the girls before the run started. We set off at 8am, and by about 2km in we were already sweating – boy was it hot! It was awesome to be back running in Geelong where I started doing fun runs and running with Jayne all those years ago (around 2009/2010 I’d say), I even ‘ran into’ one of my old Body Attack instructors Jodi (if you’re reading this Jodi it was so great to see you!)
Anyways, us girls spent the whole run chatting to each other about shopping (for fitness gear), upcoming events (they were trying to talk me into doing a 140km bike ride!), laughing and encouraging each other! It was honestly one of the best fun run’s I’ve ever done! Pat (Jayne’s fiance) was running ahead of us and said that when he’d crossed the river ahead of us, he could hear us chatting and laughing! HAHA! This pic pretty much sums up the run! ;)
We “cruised” along at a really good pace for the first 6 or so km, averaging 5:55km/h, and it wasn’t until the 7km/8km mark that we gradually picked up the pace and I started feeling it. There were a few little inclines that pushed my heart rate up (and it really didn’t go back down again), but those last three km we did in 5:40, 5:38 and 5:15! You can really see where my heart rate picked up below:
Anyway, as we approached the finish line we all encouraged each other and pushed the last few meters, it felt awesome to be surrounded by fit, awesome chicks!
Here’s the results!
River run results
Total placing: 245 / 363
Female placing: 95 / 186
Category placing: 26 / 46
Can’t wait till my next fun run now – Run 4 the kids (22nd March) which is a 15.5km run, so it’s time to step up my run length – next one I’ll do 11-12km to see how I go! :)
