Throughout the year we try to make healthy choices when we can. Eat in moderation, Paleo, Vegan, Vegetarian, IIFYM, calorie counting – whatever way you eat and whatever you call it – you try to eat your best when you can. Although there are always ‘treats’ – whatever you consider a treat, we all have them.
At Christmas and the summer holidays we tend to relax our diets (and exercise) a bit more (and so we should) – enjoy a sneaky drink, or a slice or two of plum pudding on Christmas Day. It’s a celebration, and you shouldn’t feel the need to opt out of your favourite holiday indulgences every once in a while.
By the time January 1 rolls around we’re generally feeling lethargic or sluggish, our skin might be looking a little worse for wear and we may have even put on a kilo or two over the break. The New Year is the perfect time to reboot and boost your immunity and metabolism.
When The Urban Remedy contacted me late last year about partnering with them to trial a juice cleanse in the New Year, initially I was a little apprehensive, I’d always wanted to try out a juice cleanse but was always put off by the thought of not eating solid foods for a few days. I wondered if I could hack it, and thought that it would be good test of willpower and also give me the opportunity to test and review a juice cleanse for you!
Why I decided to partner with The Urban Remedy
Not all juice cleanses are equal as I’ve found out. The few things that tipped me over the edge in choosing The Urban Remedy was:
- The juices are cold pressed, which means they are created using a hydraulic press – creating a raw ‘living’ juice. The juices are free of preservatives, concentrates, pasteurisation, heat and refined sugars. Slow cold press juicing using a hydraulic press that protects the integrity of the juice allowing 3-5 times* more nutrients to be retained versus other juicing methods.
- They are locally made here in the state I live in (Victoria), just outside of Melbourne.
According to Urban Remedy, even though our body’s organs’ are meant detox/cleanse the body naturally; it is because we eat more processed foods, meat and dairy, processed sugars as well as caffeine places a bigger strain on our digestive system.
Urban Remedy’s cleanses’ are designed by their nutritionist and in house health coach deliver the right balance of nutrients for the period that meals are replaced to promote detoxification – helping to remove extra weight, cleanse the system, deal with cravings or reboot your system.
The Urban Remedy – Soft Cleanse Review
I was sent the ‘Soft Cleanse’ to try out which apparently is perfect for newbies (aka me). It includes a mix of raw fruit, veggies to support the digestive system and helping to remove toxins and alkalise your body.
As I looked at the juices lined up in my fridge I wondered if they would really keep me satisfied. Read on to find out my thoughts during the cleanse:
Day 1 – Wednesday
I felt motivated and challenged to still do the cleanse, and not buckle. “I can do this!” Drinking the Mother Tonic first thing in the morning at 7am when I woke up was fine, as was The Antioxidant juice. This ‘breakfast’ juice was fantastic and loved the zesty-ness of the oranges and lemon and kick of cayenne pepper. Hail to Kale I would find out by the end of my cleanse was my least favourite (along with Seriously Green). Clearly I’m not a fan of the more green juices – but oh well!
By mid-lunch I was really craving crunch, but by the time I had Super Berry (the smoothie) I was full. On top of doing this cleanse, I was also week one (so two days) into a new job which was added stress I suppose. Although it was difficult, it was nice to have my ‘meals’ prepared for me for most of the week.
By the end of the day I was tired, I went straight home to the couch and relaxed. Even though the Chai Bliss kept me full and I loved the Turkish Rose (something sweet to cap the night off), I still felt like I needed to chew something – so I had a small mango cheek.
Day 2 – Thursday
If I was being brutally honest, I had a stupid argument with my partner last night and I had an awful night’s sleep. I felt a bit ‘spacy’ this morning, really hungry (I went to bed with a slightly grumbling stomach), as well as a slight headache.
Today affirmed my favourite juices- the breakfast one (which I was having around 8.30am) ‘The Antioxidant’, as well as ‘Chai Bliss’ the dinner one – so good, it tasted just like an iced chai.
During the day I felt not quite myself and was super tired by the time I got home from work at 6pm I knew that I wouldn’t be able to go to my regular PT session and cancelled. I just had zero energy!
An early night to bed and I hoped I’d feel better in the morning.
Day 3 – Friday
I woke up feeling good today. Better than I expected, that’s for sure. I started my morning ‘The Antioxidant’ and set off on my drive to work, only to have an oil cap fly off and my car smoking all over the place! What a crappy end to the week. After I sorted out my car and got a lift to work, but day only got better from there.
I was feeling full, fresh and vibrant. I was really surprised at how well I felt.
During the day at work I felt I could concentrate and get a bunch of tasks on my to-do list done. I went to bed that night thinking how awesome it was that I’d officially gone three days without eating a single meal but feeling full and refreshed by the end of it.
Post Cleanse thoughts:
The day after the cleanse I woke up feeling rested, energetic and amazing! I didn’t go out to breakfast till 10.30 with my partner and his parents. I treated myself to some grilled salmon, a rocket & radish salad and poached eggs with dill crème fraiche. I didn’t even feel like coffee, or my regular chai latte – instead opting for a peppermint tea.
At the start of the cleanse I was quite pessimistic about the experience and really thought my willpower wouldn’t stick in there. I did feel amazing at the end of the cleanse, and got some positive feedback of my mother-in-law (“Your face looks thinner, have you lost weight?”). I also lost 1.1kg and 2cm off my waist. Aside from looks and measurements, I felt less bloated and I did have that ‘cleansed’ feeling. It was hard to describe, I really felt liked I’d flushed my system of nasty toxins and felt renewed.
On Saturday night (Day 4) I went out to dinner and enjoyed a fantastic meal at a lovely new restaurant and I still felt good, not wanting to overeat or stuff myself.
Some of the things I’ve kept from the cleanse has been nibbling on fruit/veg as a snack, drinking peppermint/green tea rather than coffee and drinking more water!
I’d definitely recommend doing a cleanse, before a big event, or after the holiday period (or a holiday) to cleanse your system. These kinds of cleanses are not a weight loss tool, that’s what I learnt. The Urban Remedy cleanses are a tool to detox your system, give your guts a break from eating processed foods, sugars and caffeine.
And as an added bonus (that I didn’t envisage) is The Urban Remedy Cleanse is an educational experience to take the time to think about what you’re putting in your body (Is what I’m eating beneficial? do I need to eat this?) and a time to rethink your position about food & fuel.
