Here at North of Here we’ve been intrigued by Essential Oils for a while now, and invited Christie from Innovate Yoga to give you the run down of essential oils, how they work and ways you can use them… Thanks Christie!
You know how sometimes you smell something and you are instantly transported to a memory or a faraway place?
For me, if the wind blows in the right direction on a crisp winters day, I’m magically transported to my family holiday destination in the US Rocky Mountains. I can smell the snow in the air as soon I shut my eyes, even though I’m thousands of kilometres away.
I even have a teddy bear (yes, I am 35 years old with a teddy bear…). What I love about this little bear is how he smells. He smells like ‘home’. Which is not really a tangible place or address. It’s more emotional. He smells like comfort, safety, security; he smells like my happy place.
Scents are so powerful to unite your mind and body, to transport you emotionally to another place, to improve / change your mood, or to detox stress and anxiety from your system. And with something like 80% of all illnesses having roots in stress, I am a massive fan for exploring the power of scents.
“How do essential oils work”, you ask? Great question!!
When you breathe in, molecules pass from your nasal passage into your olfactory system, which sends signals to your limbic system and amygdala. These puppies do some cool shite; they manage your mood, control your basic emotions (fear, pleasure, anger), and are responsible for your emotional behaviour and for your motivation.
Because of their unique molecular structure, different essential oils impact these regions in various ways. For example: Lavender is said to be the oil of peace, calming and relaxation. Where as, Peppermint is much more invigorating, energizing and stimulating.
The good news is, Mother Nature has provided so many various “products” that when extracted into pure grade essential oils, do incredible things for your mind body connection, mood management, health and overall wellness.
Plus they make some epic non-toxic, all natural cleaning products. You’ll never buy supermarket chemical cleaners again. And for me with a young family, removing toxins from my home is a big priority. There is no need for us to be pouring chemicals all over our lives when there are the most amazing natural products readily available.
They also play a huge role in my self-care routines (my skin has never been healthier), in the management of my emotions (essential oils lift moods, encourage focus and concentration), in deepening my yoga and meditation practices.
I use them in three ways;
- Aromatically: diffused into the air three times a day or as needed
- Topically: applied directly to skin / focus area. E.g. As skin care products, for rashes and bites or muscle soreness, fatigue or headaches.
- Internally: some essential oils can be taken internally and this is a great way to support your immune system, give your digestion and metabolism a kick-start.
Essential oils have changed my life and not a day goes by where my use of them doesn’t positively impact my family and myself.
Because of this, my goal is to encourage others to explore their health and wellness options by learning about how to use essential oils or to have enough information to make informed decisions about their current choices. Because there is honestly is an oil for everything, and they are amazing.
If these words twig a little sense of curiosity within you, drop me an email here: firstname.lastname@example.org. I work with beautiful doTERRA oils and they certified pure therapeutic grade oils (with an incredible global sourcing method and even grown Tea Tree here in Australia!) and I’ll help guide you in learning more about essential oils and how to jump on in.
I also manage a Facebook group for my oily tribe where we share how-tos, recipes, blend ideas and loads of resources to get you started. Give me a holler if you’d like to join the tribe.
Now excuse me while I go and breathe in some Frankincense (the Three Wise Men were onto something way back when) and meditate to calm myself from a ‘mummy vs. Miss.Toddler epic battle’ of ‘go the f to sleep’….
Ahhhhh thank you universe for providing my oils. I’m grateful beyond words.
