After an incredible SOLD OUT national tour, Flow Athletic presented the next chapter of Flow After Dark Silent Disco at Melbourne Park Function Centre. I’m went along to check out the sold out session on Tuesday night – a much need stretch and relaxation session after a fun run on the weekend!
A little about the event:
Kate Kendal Flow Athletic’s founder says the event was born from a little idea and continues to grow and grow. Flow Athletic have now partnered with Silent Sounds (the headphone provider) and DJ James Mack to create a one-of-a-kind experience.
“It is literally my favourite event and something that absolutely everyone, no matter what their level of experience, can participate in. We also theme each event which makes it that much more fun and less intimidating for the newbies”.
Flow Athletic aim to create a connection for their members, “I think ‘connection’ is why we’re here as human beings and because we spend so much time working, heads down, laptops open, phones on it’s important to create experiences that are about getting together in a fun fuelled and healthy way.
“You’ll feel like you are all alone in a sea full of people. While everyone is moving the same as you and everyone has the same intention but you can’t hear them and therefore you are more likely to zone out and pay attention to your own practice and your own needs,” Kate says.
Who is the event suitable for: The class is easy enough for beginners, while more experienced yogis can add their own extensions.
I kicked off the evening by visiting the “wellness corner” set up with a few vendors – a jewellery display from Alex and Ani, tumeric latte tastings from Golden Grind, bliss ball tastings from Charlie’s Balls, and smoothies and juices from The Happy Place! Yum! I hadn’t tried a tumeric latte before, but I was pleasantly surprised – a slightly nutty flavour, slightly creamy/chalky and a hint of spice.
I arrived early, which helped me get a great spot right in front of the stage a few rows back!
The flow yoga session started just after 7pm and went right until 8.45pm. I must admit, after not participating in a Yoga class for quite a while I was a little scared of how I would go, if I remembered any moves (yes it had been that long!)
Rest assured, I actually managed a lot better than I expected and despite feeling a bit “over it” towards the end, I made it through and really enjoyed it. I initially was a apprehensive about of spending almost two hours doing yoga, but found the time to fly by in the end. Usually in a Yoga class I find myself getting a little distracted, other people’s breathing, creaking floorboards – you get the picture. But at this session the use of the headphones was fantastic! Everyone had the same channel – were were all listening to the DJ and Kate – but the headphones blocked out every.other.noise!
For me this allowed me to further focus on my own form, my own breathing and my own self. My own movements and not anyone else. The music was bloody fantastic, a good music of new house music, easy to listen to and not too distracting.
If you’re into yoga, or even if you’re not usually into it (like me), make sure you get along to it!
Be sure to check out the next Silent Yoga Disco held in the Gold Coast on Tuesday 11 October!
